History

The Republic of the Congo is a country in Central Africa. It is bordered by Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Angolan exclave province of Cabinda, and the Gulf of Guinea. The earliest inhabitants of the area were Pygmy peoples. They were largely replaced and absorbed by Bantu tribes during Bantu expansions. The Bakongo are Bantu groups that also occupied parts of present-day Angola, Gabon, and Democratic Republic of the Congo, forming the basis for ethnic affinities and rivalries among those countries. Several Bantu kingdoms—notably those of the Kongo, the Loango, and the Teke—built trade links leading into the Congo River basin.

The Republic of the Congo is most widely recognized as the adopted home of American safari guide and hunter Congo Bill. Congo Bill explored many territories in the region of the Congo along with his teenage assistant, Janu the Jungle Boy. During one of their adventures, Congo Bill met a strange golden gorilla, much more intelligent than normal gorillas. Bill's friend, the witch doctor Chief Kawolo, told him that he could control the gorilla by way of a mysterious ring, which allowed him to change minds with the gorilla. Kawolo died shortly after revealing this important information to Bill. Bill was later trapped in a cave and used the ring to switch minds with the gorilla. He later decided to use this new power to fight crime in the jungle as Congorilla.

In recent times, it was discovered that the body of the alien entity known as Gog had been residing partially buried in the jungles of the Congo. What was believed to be a temple in honor of Gog was actually his head sticking up through the Earth. Gog awakened from his slumber shortly after his successor, William Matthews, had his first encounter with the Justice Society of America. ^[1]
