Synopsis for "Am I Really Batman?"

Batman is exposed to a gas that robs him of his memory. He wakes up inside of a mental hospital, but quickly escapes and returns to Wayne Manor. Robin and Alfred help to perpetuate the belief that Bruce Wayne is not actually Batman until the Caped Crusader's true memory returns.

Notes

  • "The Signalman of Crime" is reprinted in Wanted #1.
  • Signalman's gimmick is very similar to the antics commonly attributed to the Riddler. However, he claims to have actually been inspired by the Joker and the Penguin.

Trivia

  • This issue includes a one-page "Casey the Cop" and "Warden Willis" humor strip by Henry Boltinoff.
  • This issue includes a one-page text article entitled "Trouble on the London Express".
  • This is actually the second instance in which Professor Nichols has sent Batman to ancient Rome. The first time took place in Nichols' first appearance in Batman #24. So far as continuity is concerned, this event is common to both the Earth-One and Earth-Two versions of Batman.
  • Although the name of the mental hospital Batman is placed in at the beginning of "Am I Really Batman?" is never mentioned, it is safe to assume that he is likely a patient at the infamous Arkham Asylum. As per this publishing year, Arkham Asylum has not been officially introduced into comic continuity.
