Legend tells of a caped crusader, Batman, guardian of New Gotham, and his one true love, Catwoman, the queen of the criminal underworld. Their passion left behind something extraordinary, a daughter, Huntress. Half metahuman, she has taken up her father's mantel and under cover of the night, fights to protect the innocent and helpless. Joining her in this struggle, Oracle, who was once Batman's protégé, Batgirl. She was caught in the crossfire of the war between Batman and Joker, now she fights crime a different way, a master of the cyber-realms and mentor and trainer to heroes. Together, they have taken in a young runaway, Dinah, a metahuman herself with powers to open hidden doors to the mind, powers that she is only beginning to explore. Together, these three are the protectors of New Gotham - the Birds of Prey.

Summary

Birds of Prey was a short lived television series that aired in the United States on the WB Network from October of 2002 until February of 2003. The series was loosely based on the Birds of Prey comic book series, but took place in an alternate future reality. Although the series attempted to follow in the same mold established by Smallville, it was universally panned by both critics and viewers.^{[citation needed]} A total of thirteen episodes were created for the series, with a two-hour series finale which attempted to tie together all of the existing plotlines.

The theme song to the series was "Revolution" by Aimee Allen.

It had been suggested early on that the Birds of Prey series might have taken place in the same continuity as the Smallville television series, albeit in a future timeline.^{[citation needed]} This was first hinted at in the pilot episode when Helena Kyle theorized that "strange meteor showers" were known to grant some people Metahuman abilities. One of the major plot devices of Smallville was the abundance of people who developed super-powers after being exposed to green meteor rock. However, with the introduction of Black Canary in the Smallville Season Seven episode "Siren", the possibility of both programs sharing a single continuity was rendered invalid. In Smallville, the Black Canary's name was Dinah Lance and she was in her early twenties. In Birds of Prey, Dinah Lance is still a teenager. Her mother, though patterned after the original Black Canary was named Carolyn Lance, not Dinah.
